Presqu'île and the Terreaux

The Terreaux district is located at the foot of Fourvière hill, spanning the lower slopes. A number of key mnuments can be found around the City Hall at Place des terreaux which was paved with anthracite by Buren. The fountain depicts horses. Fine Arts Museum and its monastery garden, perfect for a relaxing pause between visits, just around the corner, the Opera redesigned by Jean Nouvel in the 1980 s, is lit up in red at night.
Presqu'île and the Cordeliers

This district is the perfect place to really soak up the atmosphere of Lyon and to spend a perfect afternoon shopping. Here you'll find it all, including the pedestrianised Rue de la République, with its café terraces and major shops, or Rue Edouard Herriot with its succession of upmarket stores! The streets around Place de la Bourse abound with 'Bouchons' and other restaurants, as in the case of Rue Mercière, is always very lively at meantimes
Presqu'île and Bellecour

Lyon's largest square, where you'll find the statue of a mounted Louis XIV de Lemot, is home to all kinds of events and entertainment features all year around. It is currently undergoing reconstruction work. The Lyon Tourist Office looks forward to welcoming and advising you seven days a week from 9 am to 6 pm. www.lyon-france.com. Along with the Rectangle, it forms a specialised centre dedicated to the expansion of both business and leisure tourism in Lyon. The square is lined with restaurant and cafe terraces, bookshops and other stores. The Carré d'or links Bellecour to Les Jacobins for a truly chic shopping experience.
Presqu'ile and Perrache and Confluence

From Bellecour to Place Carnot, the choice is yours: do you prefer shopping? Just head along Rue Victor Hugo. When you reach Place Ampère, turn right, heading towards the 12th century Romanesque basilica of St martin d'Ainay. Do you prefer art, antiques and decorative items? Make your way to Rue Auguste Comte or Rue de la Charité. Visit the Textile Museum and Decorative Arts Museum. South of Perrache, the contemporary architecture of La Confluence (the largest urban renovation project meeting sustainable development standards) is gradually taking shape between the rivers Rhône and Saône.
Croix-Rousse, Vaise, banks of the Saône

The history of the Croix Rousse district is closely intertwined with that of silk weaving and brings to mind silk workers, hard labor, revolts, and the noise of the bistanclaque (hand loom). This district is home to numerous artists'workshops, theatres, and has a personality all of its own with its stairways, small squares and superb viws! Down below, the Saône flows by peacefully. The mediaeval Ile Barbe island is absolutely charming. Along the banks of the Saône, Vaise is renovating some former factories, converted into a cinema. Bocuse is setting a restaurant and a unique fast-food concept here!
Vieux Lyon and Fourvière

The splendour of the Renaissance is marvllously expressed in Old Lyon, including St Jean and its cathedral, St Paul and Georges. The 'Traboules' (passageways) are most numerous here, weaving a network of secret passages between the streets, via vaulted corridors and interior courtyards leading out onto Renaissance galleries. You can explore all of Lyon's Italian charm, including along the river Saône which reflects the mediaeval and Renaissance facades lining the banks with their ochre and pink shades. Why not take a cruise along the Saône as far as Ile Barbe.
Part Dieu

This business district was built around a major shopping centre, which was recently extended with addition of the Oxygene Tower. It stands adjacent to the Auditorium the headquarters of the Lyon National Orchestra, the Tour Part Dieu skyscraper (affectionately named the 'pencil tower' by the locals, due to its shape) and Lyon's central library. The Part Dieu high-speed rail (TGV) station is the main railway station for arrivals in Lyon, and Rhône Express shuttle leaves for the airport from behind the station. It is currently being renovated and upgraded to keep pace with the growth in traffic. Currently under construction, the InCity Tower should reach a height of 200 meters by 2014.
Cité Internationale - Brotteaux

Between Tête d'Or Park and the river Rhône, the Cité Internationale is a contemporary district designed by the architect Renzo Piano and the landscape designer Michel Corajoud. Spanning 30 hectares from Interpol to the Amphitheatre, it includes the Lyon Convention Centre, the Modern Art Museum, cinemas, a casino, hotels, restaurants, apartments, shops and offices. Alongside the park, Brotteaux, a residential district with haussmann-styled avenues, is an extremely pleasant place to stroll and shop.
Gerland Stadium

To the south, the district of Gerland is the opportunity to discover the work of the architect Tony Garnier and the urban renovation carried out here, including the halle Tony Garnier and the stadium of the city's adored football team, the Olympique Lyonnais. The halle Tony Garnier, a huge metal and glass structure, was built between 1908 and 1914 by the architect and opened for the international urban exhibition. As a performance venue since 1987, it is today a vibrant magnet for musicians, welcoming great names in contemporary music.
